An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or ITIN, is a tax number issued by the IRS to people who need to file or be included on a U.S. tax return but cannot get a Social Security number.

Who may need one

You may need an ITIN if you have to file a federal return and are not eligible for a Social Security number. This can include some nonresidents and some spouses or dependents listed on a return.

How to apply

Applications are made on Form W-7, usually together with a federal tax return, along with documents that prove your identity and foreign status. A passport is the most common document.

Why an Acceptance Agent helps

Normally, original documents or certified copies are sent to the IRS. As an IRS Certified Acceptance Agent, our office can verify identity documents here, which can reduce the need to mail your original passport.

When an ITIN expires

An ITIN can expire if it has not been used on a federal tax return for three consecutive tax years. If yours has expired and you need to file, it should be renewed. An expired ITIN can delay your return and any refund.

We prepare and submit new applications and renewals, in English or Spanish. An ITIN is for tax purposes only and does not change immigration status or work authorization.
